The Gallipoli peninsula is in the European part of Turkey. At the instigation of Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, an unsuccessful attempt was made between February 1915 and January 1916 by Allied forces to force a way through the Dardanelles to link up with Russian forces.
